ANOXIC TREATMENT
Anoxic Treatment is a safe, chemical-free method used to protect artworks, artifacts, or furniture by sealing them in a Marvelseal enclosure and replacing oxygen with an inert gas like argon. This creates an environment where pests cannot survive.
1.
Initial Setup
The affected item is inspected and carefully enclosed in a Marvelseal barrier film.
2.
Gas Introduction
Argon gas is introduced, displacing oxygen until it reaches a level of about 0.3%.
3.
Treatment Period
The item remains sealed for approximately 6 weeks, ensuring complete eradication of any biological activity.
4.
Post-Treatment Review
Once the enclosure is opened, a professional conservator inspects the item to confirm the treatment’s success and advise on further cleaning or restoration.
When to Use This Treatment
Anoxic treatment is recommended for objects that may have been exposed to pest activity or are at risk of infestation—particularly those made of organic materials such as wood, textiles, paper, or canvas.
However, not every piece requires it. Before proceeding, we recommend consulting a professional conservation lab to determine if this process is appropriate for your item.
Responsibility and Professional Oversight
OTI Fine Art Services is responsible only for performing the anoxic treatment service itself. OTI Fine Art Services does not determine whether an item requires anoxic treatment, whether it has an infestation, or whether it has sustained damage that would justify this procedure.
All decisions related to identifying the need for anoxic treatment, including assessing infestations or damage, must be made by a professional conservation lab. Any concerns regarding damage from infestation or the appropriateness of treatment should also be directed to a qualified conservator for evaluation and recommendations.
